Why and how to blog?

Starting to write is something that’s been in my mind for a while now, one of the reasons comes from when I was doing my A levels, I had two subjects that had a decent amount of writing, Economics and Politics, I had an mixed view on writing essays as I preferred to do math but at the same time, I really did enjoy expressing my views and opinions on a certain topic, even won some essay competition that got me into a cool event.

It’s now been years since I have actually written anything long and with the increased use of Ai, I feel like I am completly losing the ability to write so that’s the first reason, It’s something that I don’t do much of and want to give some time to myself to do so I can get better at it, it will also be something interesting to look and read over years down the line. There are also times that I feel “bored” and I can’t think of anything better to do than to just write, but I will use no ai in my writings, not even to proof read, the whole point is to write directly from me and try to improve over time.

Now, what to actually blog? There’s many ideas I have in my head but I have been reading some blogs recently on this topic that I want to share, first one being Advice for Better Blog Posts by Rachel Thomas, just in the first paragraph she talks about having her students write a technical blog post as part of her computational linear algebra course, there are some interesting courses I have bought on udemy, that I will blog about but link them to finance.

She later talks about making a list about other blog post and writing brief summaries and that’s what I am doing now. Another good blog post was “advice” for aspiring tech bloggers by Julia Evans, she and rachel have similar views, blogging is a great way to learn new things but they differ on the how long it takes them to write a post. Julia takes a couple of hours but Rachel may take up to 4 days, I think for me the sweet spot will be somewhere in the middle.

I love this idea of admitting what you don’t know, that alone can be a great blog post, going further, if you then are mindful and think, okay so I know this now and it would have helped me so much a week or year ago, then surley there is at least ONE other person that can benefit from it.

I will try to write at least one blog a week so see you next week!
